The data of this dataset series can be used as basis for decision making in the overall land use and environmental planning, habitat mapping, vulnerability analyzes, impact analysis in connection with installations on the seabed etc. Map showing sediments classified by grain size gives a good overview of the depositional environment and seabed conditions.

Objects in all three datasets are described with the same SOSI standard attributes and theme codes, but the datasets have a significant difference in the degree of detail depending on how the data are interpreted and at which scale they are digitized dictating the choice of most appropriate scale of usage. The recommended scales are: Grain size, overview M < 1:2 000 000; Grain size, regional M 1:50 000 - 1:250 000; Grain size, detailed M > 1:50 000. The three individual datasets have different coverage, but Seabed sediments (grain size), overview and Seabed sediments (grain size), regional overlap over large areas in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. Seabed sediments (grain size), detailed, have data coverage only in some fjords and coastal areas.
