Seabed sediments (genesis), overview
This data set contains the distribution of seabed sediments classified after genesis in mapped areas on the Norwegian shelf. The superficial deposit surface type describes the superficial deposits genesis. The data is based on the contents of the Quaternary map which are analogous (scale 1: 250,000 to 1: 500,000), or based on digital data from modern surveying.

The dataset has been interpreted and digitized by NGU, but the basis for interpretations is data from the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), the Norwegian Mapping Authority, IBCAO, OLEX and the Institute for Continental Shelf Studies (IKU). In addition, a number of scientific articles, reports and older maps have been used to compile the formation map. The data theme Bottom sediments (formation), overview is mainly based on analyses of sediment samples from the seabed and interpretation of analogue and digital seismic data. To a limited extent, interpretation of digital reflectivity data and seabed video has also been used. Water depth data has been included as support in the interpretation. The data has been digitized and prepared using Arc GIS tools. The methodology is described in the property fields Målemetode and Geopåvisningtype. Theme codes and properties mainly follow the SOSI standard.
