Sedimentation rates of seabed sediments in the North Sea and Skagerrak

The dataset provides an overview of sedimentation rates in the upper ten centimetres of seabed sediments in the North Sea and Skagerrak. Results are quantitative and were estimated with spatial modelling methods. Uncertainties of the estimates are provided as well.

Purpose

The purpose of the map is to show the spatial variation of sedimentation rates in seabed sediments of the North Sea and Skagerrak. Sedimentation rates measure how quickly sediment accumulates at the seabed. The measurement unit is centimetres per year. Noteworthy sedimentation in the North Sea and Skagerrak is limited to deep areas, where the impact of bottom currents and waves is weak. Uncertainty highlights how uncertain the estimates of the spatial model are. Uncertainty is measured in the same unit as the estimated parameter.

Statement

Sedimentation rates and corresponding uncertainty in estimates are predicted with machine learning. The results are quantitative and are estimated using spatial modeling methods. Various data sources have been used, including from MAREANO, EMODnet, Bio-ORACLE and scientific publications.
