Marine sedimentary environment, detailed
The dataset provides an overview of the dominant sedimentation environment in the mapped area. This is an interpretation of the processes that prevail on and near the seabed in terms of erosion, transport and deposition of sediments. Based on information about the sedimentatary environment, other thematic maps can be developed, such as bottom currents, sediment transport, pollution distribution, etc.

- Purpose
-
The data set provides an overview of the sedimentatary environment at the seabed in the area that has been mapped. Areas with fine-grained sediments (clay/silt) indicate weak bottom currents and a calm depositional environment, while coarse-grained sediments indicate currents that prevent the deposition of or cause the outwash of fine-grained sediments, while the coarser ones (sand, gravel and rock) remain. The map thus indicates the strength and direction of the bottom currents.

Sedimentary environment has been interpreted and digitized by NGU. The source data for interpretations is data from Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), the Norwegian Mapping Authority (SKS) and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). Sedimentary environment is interpreted based on maps of Seabed sediments (grain size) and detailed bathymetry data. Sedimentary environment has been digitized and prepared using ArcGIS tools. The methodology is described in the ‘Målemetode’ and ‘GeolPavisningstype’ fields.
