Radon in indoor air in Norway
The grid cell statistics are based on the national database of indoor radon measurements maintained by the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority updated to 28th March 2012. Statistical parameters include X (X-co-ordinate of the centre of the cell); Y (Y-co-ordinate of the centre of the cell); N (number of radon concentration data in the cell); am (arithmetic mean Bq/m3); sd (standard deviation associated with am); aml (arithmetic mean of log concentrations); sdl (standard deviation associated with aml); gm (geometric mean); med (median); min (minimum); max (maximum); pct1 (actual percentage of concentrations above 100 Bq/m3); cdf1 (as pct1 but derived from the log-normal distribution of radon values in the cell); bay 1 (as cdf1 but modified using Bayesian statistics on the whole data set); Pct2, cdf2 and bay2 (percentages above 200 Bq/m3); Pct3, cdf3 and bay3 (percentages above 400 Bq/m3)

- Purpose
-
The data set can be used to summarise the distribution of indoor radon measurements (using attribute N), examine the spatial variation in mean radon values (using attributes am and gm) and map the spatial variation in radon potential in terms of the percentages of data above a choice of three thresholds: 100, 200 and 400 Bq/m3 (using attributes pct1, pct2, pct3, cdf1, cdf2, cdf3, bay1, bay2, bay3)

- Use limitation
-
The 5 km x 5 km cell data set gives a coarse overview of the locations of areas with high indoor radon concentrations and areas with a high frequency of elevated indoor radon concentrations. Therefore the theme is best suited to display at 1:250000 scale or coarser.

The grid cell data set is derived from indoor radon concentration data present in the NRPA's database as of 28/03/2012. Only data from living rooms and bedrooms located on the ground floors of residential buildings were used. Statists were generated for data falling in 5 km x 5 km cells covering all of the Norwegian mainland. The statistics include the number of data falling in each cell (N). the maximum and minimum radon concentration values (max, min), the mean and standard deviation (am and sd), the mean log and standard deviation log (aml, sdl), the median (med), the geometric mean (gm) and measures of radon susceptibility (pct1, pct2, pct3, cdf1, cdf2, cdf3, bay1, bay2, bay3) The measure of radon susceptibility is the percentage of radon values that exceed a critical threshold value. Pct1, pct2 and pct3 are the actual percentages of values in the cells that exceed 100, 200 and 400 Bq/m3 respectively. Cdf1, cdf2 and cdf3 are the same measures of radon susceptibility as pct1, pct2 and pct3 but they are derived from the mean and standard deviation of log radon values. bay1, bay2 and bay3 are the same measures of radon susceptibility as pct1, pct2 and pct3 but they are derived from the mean and standard deviation of log radon values and Bayesian "prior knowledge" parameters. The "pct" measures of radon susceptibility are simply derived and therefore it is tempting to use them. However, when N is small, a better estimate of the actual radon susceptibility within a cell might be derived from the "bay" measures that are influenced by prior knowledge of the statistical distribution of radon values. Cells are included if they enclose one or more radon values. Clearly the validity of statistical values drops when N falls below 30
