Cultural heritage - Listed wooden buildings environments
The dataset covers the Directorate for Cultural Heritage's listed wooden buildings environments. These are cultural historical wooden buildings environments subject to special fire protection considerations. These environments are especially vulnerable to fires. The largest areas of continuous, historical wooden buildings environments are found in cities, such as central Halden, historical Stavanger, and large parts of Trondheim. Even so, wooden buildings environments are also found on larger farmyards, such as Havråtunet in Hordaland, and in historical fishing communities, such as Sør-Gjæslingan in Nord-Trøndelag.

The dataset is suitable for identifying vulnerable densely built areas of cultural historical significance. The dataset provides a better overview of these kinds of valuable areas while working with zoning and building plans.

The identification of these areas is the result of a technical and cultural heritage mapping of wooden buildings environments by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage and the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection. 167 areas of cultural heritage value that were considered vulnerable to fire contagion were identified. In addition to these, one expects to be able to identify further areas, so that the number of areas is probably closer to 180. An overview of these areas can be found in the rapport “Nasjonal kartlegging av brannsikkerhet i verneverdig tett trehusbebyggelse”. Many Norwegian towns have been subject to large scale fires. Norway has a distinctive building tradition characterised by dense wooden buildings environments, in which modest fires can rapidly evolve into large fires that become difficult to contain.
