Marine CO2 system data in a high-Arctic fjord Rijpfjorden, northern coast of Svalbard and the Nansen Basin in July 2012-2014
This dataset contains results from seawater column samples collected in Rijpfjorden (80°N, 22°30’E) and northern coast of Svalbard during three years in July 2012-2014 using R/V Lance. Measured variables include seawater total alkalinity (AT), total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), salinity, and temperature.

Carbonate chemistry/marine CO2 system (total alkalinity, total dissolved inorganic carbon) were collected during annual MOSJ (Monitoring of Svalbard and Jan Mayen) summer cruises to Rijpfjorden and the adjacent Nansen Basin of the Arctic Ocean with R/V Lance on 16 July–3 August 2012, 26–30 July 2013, and 27–29 July 2014.
Physical measurements and water samples were collected using a ship-board CTD probe attached to a Rosette-sampler with 12 Niskin bottles (SBE911 plus, Sea Bird Electronics, Bellevue, WA, United States). The CTD is calibrated by Sea Bird Electronics annually before each sampling season. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (AT) were determined, for carbonate chemistry/CO2 system, during 2012–2014.
Chemical analyses:
Carbonate chemistry parameters were calculated from DIC and total alkalinity (AT) values that were analyzed after the cruises at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR Tromsø,
Norway) following the method described in Dickson et al. (2007). DIC was determined using gas extraction of acidified samples followed by coulometric titration and photometric detection using a Versatile Instrument for the Determination of Titration carbonate (VINDTA 3D, Marianda, Germany). The AT was determined by potentiometric titration with 0.1 N hydrochloric acid using a Versatile Instrument for the Determination of Titration Alkalinity (VINDTA 3S, Marianda, Germany). Routine analyses of Certified Reference Materials (CRM, provided by A. G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, United States) ensured the accuracy of the measurements, which was better than ±1 μmol kg−1 and ±2 μmol kg−1 for DIC and AT, respectively.
