Seabed habitat protection zone
Based on Norwegian Regulations governing the control of fishing using bottom trawl equipment in the Norwegian Economic Zone, the fishing zone around Jan Mayen and the fish conservation zone at Svalbard.
The purpose of the regulation is to protect vulnerable benthic habitats. The rules, which are based on the "precautionary approach", define all seabed more than 1000 metres deep as vulnerable. Fishing equipment may cause major damage to these habitats. Fishing using bottom trawl equipment is basically prohibited in areas more than 1000 metres deep.
