This dataset can be used to estimate the likelihood that such a community be present at a given location with the aim to guide decisions on what uses may or may not be allowed. The dataset can also be used to infer the potential distribution of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the area.

The probabilities were calculated by a machine learning model (a Random Forest) using various environmental data layers (oceanography, bathymetry, substrate, and light availability) as predictors. The model was trained on 307 point-locality observations, where the presence or absence of the community had been registered. These point data were derived from underwater video footage.
Furthermore, the model was validated with an additional 153 observations registered in the same way. Model evaluation yielded an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.92 (high) and the error rate is estimated at 10.1 %
