For mer informasjon: http://www.ssb.no/arealsentrum

The dataset describes longer tracks or routes in the terrain where reindeer are either driven or migrate of their own accord between the seasonal pastures. Essentially, a migration track symbolises active migration/driving of reindeer, and according to section 22 of the Reindeer Husbandry Act migration tracks for reindeer herding must not be closed. The width will vary depending on factors such as the terrain and snow conditions, and the size and gathering of the herd. Grazing pockets/overnight pastures are marked as extensions. The autumn migration is usually more widespread and takes place over a considerably longer time than the spring migration. Therefore, the autumn tracks are often wider. The maps are to be regarded as an illustration of how the reindeer industry primarily and normally uses these areas. The Act on reindeer husbandry (the Reindeer Husbandry Act) controls the rights and obligations of reindeer herders in relation to land use. The reindeer grazing areas where Sami reindeer husbandry takes place covers approx. 40% of the land area of Norway, extending from Finnmark in the north to Engerdal, Hedmark in the south. Sami reindeer husbandry also takes place in Trollheimen on the basis of a special legal arrangement. Non-sami reindeer husbandry takes place in the mountain areas in Southern Norway, based on agreements with landowners.

The national land resource database (AR) classifies the land cover of mainland Norway according to the suitability for agriculture and natural plant production. National land resource datasets are available at scale 1:5.000 (AR5), 1:50.000 (AR50) and 1:250.000 (AR250). \\nAR250 is the Norwegian low resolution land resource dataset, covering the entire mainland Norway. It is built and maintained for cartographic presentations at regional level (1:100.000 to 1:300.000). The dataset is not intended for spatial analysis. \\nFeatures in AR250 are continuous areas represented as polygons with attributes assigned according to the classification criteria of AR250. The primary level of classification is land type (arealtype), based on a combination of land cover and land use. Second level attributes are forest site quality class (skogbonitet) and forest cover type (treslag). AR250 also includes information about arable land on current bare land, marsh or forest. \\nIn AR250, the general minimum mapping unit is 10 hectares for polygons that have identical combinations of attribute values. Smaller mapping units occur between identical land types if they have different forest cover or forest site quality.

Reindeer husbandry in Norway is conducted primarily in the Sámi reindeer herding area, which is divided into six regional reindeer herding areas; East-Finnmark, West-Finnmark, Troms, Nordland, Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag/Hedmark. The Reindeer herding area comprises approximately 14,000 km2 or 40% of Norway’s surface area. In addition to these are four so-called semi domesticated reindeer herding districts (tamreinlag) outside the Sámi reindeer herding area and the work with reindeer in these is of non-sámi character. The right to own reindeer according to the reindeer husbandry act includes the right to graze reindeer in the mountains and other sites, including former cultivated fields and hay meadows outside and which are not linked to inhabited areas or facilities in operation, unless they are kept in the claim and not used as pasture, unless the area is fenced to keep out reindeer. Grazing rights include the right to seasonal grazing as necessary, such as spring, summer, autumn and winter grazing and also migratory routes, calving areas and rutting areas. Outside the Sámi reindeer herding area, reindeer husbandry may not be conducted without the King’s special permission. Such permission can be granted only to a person who by written sources can prove that they are associated with the current landowners and rights holders, or can access large enough areas with good reindeer pastures. A permit may not be granted within the wild reindeer area, nor so close to the Sámi reindeer herding area that it might cause conflict. The permit can be given for a certain period and the management can be subject to certain conditions.

The seasonal land use is divided into five seasons, which in turn are divided into two categories according to function and grazing intensity. Summer pastures are areas used by reindeer in the summer. Summer pastures are also divided into categories: Summer pasture 1 – High summer land, dental parts generally above the tree line where reindeer remain around midsummer in order to meet their need for grazing, quiet conditions, cooling and as few insects as possible within short distances. Summer pasture 2 – Lower-lying summer land, less central and/or less intensively used areas. The use of pastureland will vary from year to year within the same area. The classification system is applicable to reindeer husbandry all over the country. The annual variations in factors such as weather and pasture conditions means that the delimitation of the seasons has to be somewhat broad and approximate.
