Seabed sediments (genesis) describes the geological processes behind deposition of the sediments in the uppermost 1-2 m of the seabed. The map is equivalent to Quaternary maps on land. The dataset series comprise three datasets: Seabed sediments (genesis), overview, Seabed sediments (genesis), regional and Seabed sediments (genesis), detailed. The three individual datasets are digitized in different scales and have different data coverage.

The data set shows the total thickness of sediments deposited on the continental shelf and slope off the south and west of Norway in the Quaternary (the last 2.6 million years). The thickness varies greatly over the mapped area, from 0 to 1800 ms twt (milliseconds two-way travel time) (about 0 to 1500 m).

Seabed sediments and sedimentary environment. The map service presents the grain size composition, relative hardness and the genesis of the of the seabed sediments in Norwegian marine areas. The thickness of Quaternary sediments on the Norwegian Shelf and the thickness of the Holocene sediments in the Skagerrak are also presented.
